Mr. Lama Seru Building highway in everest trail.
On the way from Namche to Everest Base Camp, you will see a man sitting on a chair beside a donation box. He is none other than Mr. Pasang Sherpa, popularly known as "Lama Seru". Although Pasang is originally from Solu, his contribution is much greater than any of the locals from Khumbu Region towards trail development. At the age of 18, he first came to the Everest Region for trekking. He found the trail extremely unsafe for tourists and locals to travel and pass yaks on the narrow path. Soon after the trek, he came back to khumbu and left his trekking profession to dedicate his life towards improving the trails along the Everest route. At the beginning, he started the work alone from Dingboche. Later on, he employed some workers after receiving donations from individual tourists, locals and organizations. Presently he is working on the trail from Namche to Kengjuma. Pasang lives with his wife Lhakpa Yangji Sherpa at khumjung. They rent a house at the foot of khumjung village. Pasang still heads for work, while Lhakpa does the household chores.. She washes his clothes, prepare meals and walks to the trail to serve him lunch.
At present, Pasang does not do the road work himself. He stays at the roadside watching everything. "I am old. I cannot work like the young," he says with a smile. A week ago, the Nagarik Daily News awarded Lama Seru with the title of National Hero of the Year 2073 for his 56 years of dedication in building trail in Everest Region. Pasang has only one expectation of the government. His dream is a very sweet one. "I made it easy for the tourists. I would be happy if they garlanded me and took for around Kathmandu city," he quipped.
